Leeds dad and son duo box clever together

This is one father-and-son duo you really shouldn’t mess with.

Teenager Callam Charlesworth, from Beeston, Leeds, is being tipped for big things after following in the footsteps of his dad Phillip Hoban—by taking up cage fighting.

The 18-year-old was inspired to start mixed martial arts (MMA) after watching the older man’s exploits.

Now the pair are set to make it a real family affair when they appear on the same bill at a fight in Leeds later this year.

Callam is currently doing a work placement at the Hunslet Club, which provides activities and experiences for children and young people in south Leeds.

He said: “My dad has been through a lot in his life, but has shown me what you can achieve if you knuckle down.

“He says if I keep at it I can go far.

“Knowing that he’s there will give me that extra boost.

Phillip, 38, who has won four professional fights, added: “I’m always more nervous watching him fight than I am fighting myself.

“When I’m fighting I’m in control, but I can’t control what happens in his fights.

“If I had to choose for one of us to win it would be Callam.

“I’m so proud of him, I just hope he can go a lot further than me.

Phillip got into cage fighting about eight years ago after seeing it on television.

He said he was keen for his son to take up sport and fitness to keep him on the straight and narrow.

“I always wanted him to do sports because in the area we’re from a lot of the lads seem to be getting into trouble,” he said.

“I would rather he was doing something productive.

“The sky’s the limit—I came to it quite late in life but he’s only young and he could do big things.”

Callam added: “I like the adrenalin. You aren’t going out there to hurt anyone, but to compete and to learn.”

The pair will compete in separate weight classes at the city’s biggest MMA event, AON 6, at the John Charles Centre on May 3.

Event promoter Faisal Nathani said: “The unique prospect of a father and son from the city fighting in the same show is something that the people of Leeds can really get behind.”
